A useful haircut consultation starts with how you want your hair to look and how you actually wear it. You do not need to know haircutting terminology. A reference, a few details about your routine and a clear explanation of what you want to keep or change give your barber a good place to start.
At Brazen Men’s Hair, you can book at our Edinburgh shops in Leith and Polwarth. Your consultation helps us work out a haircut around your hair, your style and your daily routine.
Bring a reference and explain what you like about it
A photograph is useful when you can point to the details that interest you. You might like the length through the front, the amount of hair around the ears or how the top sits. Tell your barber which parts matter most.
Two people can ask for the same style and need different cutting decisions. Your current length, density and growth patterns affect the options, so use the image to start a conversation about what works on your hair.
The Brazen gallery shows real work from the shops. Save a reference from there or from our Instagram if it helps you explain your aim.
Say what is bothering you now
Describe the problem in ordinary words. Perhaps the fringe falls into your eyes, the sides grow out wider than you like, or one area refuses to sit the way you want it to.
Explain when it happens: straight after washing, once the hair is dry, with product or as the haircut grows out. Those details are more useful than feeling you must choose a technical name before your appointment.
If you like most of your current haircut, say that too. Knowing what to keep is as useful as knowing what to change.
Describe your normal styling routine
Tell your barber whether you usually air-dry or use a dryer, whether you apply a product and how much time you spend styling. Be realistic about the routine you want to maintain.
If you are willing to change how you style your hair, explain what you would be comfortable learning. Ask your barber to show you how to wear the finished cut so you can practise the same approach at home.
Explain your plans for the length
If you are growing your hair, say so before the cutting starts. Talk about the areas you want to retain and the parts that need attention during the transition.
If you are considering a larger change, bring it up during booking if you are unsure which appointment to choose. The online booking system shows current services, prices and available times. Contact the shop if the right service is unclear.
Discuss the beard as part of the overall look
When booking a beard service or a haircut and beard appointment, explain the length and shape you want to keep. Mention anything that feels difficult to maintain, and bring a reference if it helps.
Your hair and beard can be discussed together so the result suits the look you want. Choose the appropriate service in the booking system so the appointment reflects the work requested.
Questions you can ask in the chair
What would you adapt from my reference for my hair?
Which areas are worth retaining or changing?
How would I style this at home?
What should I expect as it grows out?
What should I book for the next visit?
A consultation is a conversation. If your barber’s description differs from what you had in mind, explain that before the work begins.
